Banner Secondary is a primary agent in approving the link between Florida's AWI Targeted Occupations List and Florida's CAPE Secondary Career Academia.

Workforce Florida, Inc., engaging through its Employ Florida delivery system, has established statewide centers of excellence to address curriculum, employer, and education-targeted industry requirements in sectors that are most critical to Florida’s economic future.

This Banner Center will develop secondary academies spanning Florida’s current and future education sectors. The goal is industry certification based programs to prepare students for the workplace and college.

CHOICE Engineering Students
The high school student is using
AUTOCAD to draw some orthographic
views of an engineering item. Engineering students draw their ideas using AUTOCAD to explain them to others.
CHOICE IT Students
CAPE students answered questions about their program, which prepares them to become web designers, programmers or network technicians. Some of them have outsourced certain projects to India.

PURPOSE

The establishment of new secondary career academies throughout Florida will expand and improve Florida’s response to providing a highly-skilled and highly-trained workforce thus meeting the demand to sustain a strong state economy.

SUMMARY

Through statewide technical meetings, business and industry partnerships and compliance with new Florida legislation, future secondary academy sites will be developed.  As per the contract, twelve (12) Secondary Career Academies will be established per year in new arenas or with new populations of students.

  • Six (6) will be aligned with current Employ Florida Banner Centers
  • New Career Academies will be established in five (5) different career institutes or locations
  • Four (4) will be developed in counties with no existing career academies

Key Components

Counties are encouraged to utilize a flexible model to form a unique career academy program to meet local and regional needs of the area, without compromising any of the three (3) core components.

Counties must link education and business to meet industry needs through certifications.

  • Industry Certifications
  • Internships, Externships, Training, Teachers from industry

Counties must have partnerships with the local Workforce Development Boards, Economic Development Councils, Chambers of Commerce, etc.

  • Development of a pipeline of trained workers
  • Assistance in the training, certification and job placement of skilled workers

Counties must develop post-secondary articulation agreements with community colleges and universities. 

  • College Credit for Certifications, Dual Enrollment, Accelerated Program
